110 Things I love about Writing.

Ouch! Did I just typed in one hundred and ten things I love about writing? This is indeed outrageous!

My main target was to write 10 things I love about writing. But hey, I think I can do this. Anyway, are you not here to help? Ha..ha..

Before one do proceed, if I may ask what’s writing? And obviously your definition will differ from mine as well as that of these.

1.”Writing is a struggle against silence.”

(Carlos Fuentes, novelist and essayist)

2.”Writing gives you the illusion of control, and then you realize it’s just an illusion, that people are going to bring their own stuff into it.”

(David Sedaris, humorist and essayist)

3.”Writing is its own reward.”

(Henry Miller, novelist)

4.”Writing is like prostitution. First you do it for love, and then for a few close friends, and then for money.”

5.(Molière, playwright) “Writing is hard work, not magic. It begins with deciding why you are writing and whom you are writing for. What is your intent? What do you want the reader to get out of it? What do you want to get out of it. It’s also about making a serious time commitment and getting the project done.”

(Suze Orman, finance editor and author)

6.”Writing is [like] making a table. With both you are working with reality, a material just as hard as wood. Both are full of tricks and techniques. Basically very little magic and a lot of hard work are involved. . . . What is a privilege, however, is to do a job to your satisfaction.”

(Gabriel Garcia Marquez, novelist)

7.”People on the outside think there’s something magical about writing, that you go up in the attic at midnight and cast the bones and come down in the morning with a story, but it isn’t like that. You sit in back of the typewriter and you work, and that’s all there is to it.”

(Harlan Ellison, science fiction writer)

8.”Writing, I think, is not apart from living. Writing is a kind of double living. The writer experiences everything twice. Once in reality and once in that mirror which waits always before or behind.”

(Catherine Drinker Bowen, biographer)

9.”Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia.”

(E.L. Doctorow, novelist)

10.”Writing is turning one’s worst moments into money.”

(J. P. Donleavy, novelist)

  1. Hi Emmanuel,

    I love these numbers…

4.”Writing is like prostitution. First you do it for love, and then for a few close friends, and then for money.”

And I had done that too…cry while I write. I used to write a lot “just everyday life” in Livejournal. Did it for 8 years and I just love writing. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing these.

    Have a manic Monday!!

    1. May I make a small suggestion?

You need @cudjoe1991 at the end of your SHARE Twitter button. I have to go to your twitter and “cut and paste” your @username at end of this share post.

I just posted your stuff on Twitter. Reason why you need that @cudjoe1991 at end of the Twitter share post is this ALERTS you when someone is sharing your post. 🙂

    2. agreed with you Angella.
Point 4 was the real center of attraction for the article. It was really awesome and now I am going to copy it as my answer for the question “What is writing?”

  2. Well Emmanuel!
I’ve been blogging and writing for last 5 years. Now I feels like I lost the enthusiasm. Any suggestions??

  3. you already mentioned all the things i love about writing.the only thing that you did not mention is ” i can earn through writing”

i am a freelance writer by profession. aside the fact that i really love writing (writing essays is my favorite part of examinations during my college days), i also love the idea of earning from something that we love.

if we are earning from things that we love, it is like not a work at all 🙂

  4. Oh my god ! I was afraid while reading the title 🙂 I was thinking the post is too much long 🙂 i was wrong….clever boy 😛

“writing is turning one’s worst moment into money”,I am inspired by this line 🙂

    Appreciated post !

  5. hi bro !
How much time did it take for you to compile this list ? . Writing applications was/is the key source of income for me ..this is what i love about writing 😀

  6. Orman’s quote is spot on Emmanuel.

Like all you do, figure out why you are doing it. Once you write with a purpose in mind, you practice, honing your skills, and in time you come to love it.

I never imagined 5 years ago I would be in love with writing, blogging, guest posting….but after 4,000 total posts and articles, I can see why 😉

    Thanks for sharing!

i have said more than one right? nice and have a great day

  9. It is an awesome feel to read through this post and it is very difficult to catch hold of 100 things for a post. The big challenge what I feel with 100 post is don’t get dried up with the ideas but you are drain out writing numbers and watching them increase 1 by 1.

I recommend from my experience of writing 100 things in a post is to write down the complete number of ideas and then place the numbers in front of them. This will make you complete the post… And thanks for passing by my Blog. 🙂

  10. Love this! inspiring and encouraging. it reminds me why i wrote my book, why i want to write more and why i create through art.

  11. Hi,

  14. to feel good when you are lonely.
to impart knowledge to your readers in the field of your expertise.
learn to use jargon by writing.

  15. Ohh u nailed it….u have included all the necessary and important things….even i love about writing….got an opurtunity to learn more things about writing and im really inspired from it….Awesome post keep it up.

  16. Hi Emmanuel,
Thanks for the list. I am still smiling. My personal favorite ones are 28 and 49)) As to my own reasons, I’d add the following ones:

    – escaping reality
    -helping somebody to escape reality

  17. Hi Emmanuel,

    LOL! I like:

”Writing is like prostitution. First you do it for love, and then for a few close friends, and then for money.”

That’s probably true for most online writers.

For me I like writing because I want to raise awareness for certain topics.

Writing is a way for me to express my ideas in a more profound way. Expressing ideas verbally sometimes doesn’t give us that opportunity. Guess that’s why I’m a better writer than speaker 😉

  18. Interesting and very helpful post, especially since sometimes I have a difficult time coming up with something to write about.

I love that you say that writing is like prostitution, I have never thought about it.

But now that you mention it, I guess it is.

  19. wow, Emmanuel Kabenlah Cudjoe
